HDR Nirvana - High Dynamic Range Photography - Class
07/30/2010

High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography is a recent and thrilling innovation in the world of photography.  The human eye has always been able to perceive a far greater tonal range than a camera can capture.  HDR was originally developed in an attempt to level the playing field between the camera and the human eye.  However, some photographers now use HDR software to create breathtaking images that appear painterly or surreal.  Here are just a few examples of incredible HDR photography. In this class, the always exuberant and infinitely patient Mark Johnson introduces you to the phenomenal world of HDR. Your experience takes place both in the field and in BDA's digital lab.  The day begins at 10 am in the lab where Mark introduces you to HDR and explains how to use your digital SLR to capture exposure-bracketed images.  Participants then embark on a late morning photo shoot to a location ripe with HDR possibilities.  Lunch is followed by hands-on classroom time devoted to processing images in Photomatix Pro and finishing them in Photoshop. What You'll Learn: What subjects and atmospheric conditions are most suitable to HDR How to use your camera to capture exposure-bracketed images How to tone map images in Photomatix Pro Methods for using Photoshop to improve or enhance tone mapped files No experience with Photomatix Pro or Photoshop is required. Both programs are available on the BDA lab computers.  Participation in any of Mark's Photoshop courses (Photoshop: Embracing Your Creative Side or Photoshop: The Heart of Color Correction) will only enhance your experience.   "G-Men in G-Strings" at TCL
07/30/2010

The Theater Company of Lafayette (TCL) presents G-Men in G-Strings: The J. Edgar Hoover Follies, 9 all new, all comic short plays about the FBI and America’s most unlikely cross-dresser.  Although inspired by Hoover, the sketches are a wild ride that touches on decidedly contemporary issues, such as ever-present surveillance and schoolyard bullies.  It's George Orwell meets Mel Brooks.  The show runs two weekends, from Friday, July 30th through Saturday, August 7th. G-Men follows TCL’s popular “new play festival” format, which in the past several years has been used for The Frankenstein Experiment, The Deep Beep Beep (commemorating the 50th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik), 10,000 Wayniacs (about Las Vegas and Wayne Newton), and Separated at Birth: The Lincoln/Darwin Plays (commemorating the 200th birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin). The festivals are the brainchild of TCL Artistic Director, Madge Montgomery.  “At first we weren’t sure about how audiences would react to an evening of original, short plays loosely based on a single theme,” she says. “But they loved it from the beginning, and the concept has really taken off.  Over the years we’ve added things like live music during the scene changes and a comic through-line to tie the pieces together.  Our last two festivals, 10,000 Wayniacs and Separated at Birth were among our highest box-office draws ever.” The festival’s popularity has been growing with playwrights as well.  Adds Montgomery, “This year we had well over 100 scripts submitted from all over the U.S. and overseas.  Included in this year’s show are plays by writers from the Pacific Northwest and New York.  There’s even one from Israel!” Shows are:     Friday, July 30th, Saturday, July 31st at 7:30 PM     Sunday, August 1st at 6 PM     Thursday, August 5; Friday, August 6th, Saturday, August 7th at 7:30 PM Performances are at the historic Mary Miller Theater, 300 E. Simpson Street, Lafayette. Tickets are $12 General Admission and $10 for Seniors (55+), Students, and Children (12 and under).  Purchase tickets online at www.TCLStage.org or make reservations by calling the Box Office at 720-209-2154.   This event was submitted by the Boulder County Arts Alliance http://www.bouldercountyarts.org/calendar/events/index.php?com=detail&eID=22437

Telling the Story with Light and Shadow - Class
08/03/2010

A boy is sitting at the dining room table. The room is dark, light from a hallway lights the boy’s face. The moon casts the shadows of trees on the window behind him. Uncomfortable, right? The lighting tells us immediately that something is wrong. Lighting is an integral part of the Storytelling process. Whether we are lighting a feature film, an interview or a food show we are telling a story. Light is necessary every time we focus the lens. The way a picture on the screen impacts the viewer is determined by the light. The quality, angle and brightness of the light evoke different emotions. This workshop will demonstrate lighting techniques that will help you apply the art and craft of lighting in your film-making endeavors.  It is appropriate for all experienced filmmakers who want insights at playing with lighting.     The class will explore the wide variety of lighting instruments, from 12,000 watt HMIs to a 100 watt light bulb. From large light sources to a pin point of light. Why is the most important light the one you do not turn on? Often the shadow tells us more than what we can see.  We will then set up a scene, light it in several different ways and film it. We will evaluate the lighting in each scene and discover why it changes our response to the scene.  We will also explore the lighting in scenes that have been shot by several masters of Cinematography.  Lastly, we will explore lighting an Interview. Bring your work gloves as this will be a hands-on workshop! The class is being held at one of Denver’s premier film studios Lighting Services, Inc. (LSI) in central Denver.  This is a unique opportunity to work with a cinematographer with many years of experience, in a studio setting with tons of professional gear to play with.  In addition, there will be an opportunity to tour the facility at some point in the day. For complete details, PLEASE REGISTER at the BDA website. Boulder Digital Arts offers affordable training in digital media from professionals working in the field.   Colorado Shakespeare Festival presents Our Town
08/03/2010

by Thornton Wilder Directed by Victoria Erville First produced in 1938, the Pulitzer-Prize winning Our Town has become an American stage treasure. The play Wilders best-known and most frequently performed work - reveals the ordinary lives of the people in the small town of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire. Our Town defies most conventional theatrical genres - it is neither a comedy nor a tragedy, neither a romance nor a farce. It is, rather, a contemplative work and richly timeless commentary on nothing less than the tragicomedy of human existence. Music by Harvey Schmidt; Book and Lyrics by Tom Jones Directed by Sands Hall "Try to Remember" a time when The Fantasticks wasn't captivating audiences. A unique take on boy meets the girl next door, the story tells of Luisa and Matt, entering the bloom of their youth, as the world stands open to them, inviting them to explore. Their parents, scheming to encourage their childrens budding love by pretending to oppose it, build a wall between the teens, hiring the trickster El Gallo to thwart their romance. By moonlight, Matt and Luisa fall hard for each other. When finally the couple comes together in the light of day, they must decide between the comfort of illusion and the wisdom that only comes with experience. Can their romance survive the sunlight?   Intermediate and Advanced Color Management for Photography
08/05/2010

Intermediate/Advanced Color Management Course Description: If you're ready to stop wasting time and money on print remakes and tweaks, this is the workshop for you. Today's photographer has a huge variety of choices when deciding how to produce a print. There are many papers and substrates, and just as many different methods of printing on them. Some devices are RGB and others are CMYK. In spite of so many variables you can obtain accurate, predictable, and repeatable print results by implementing a color management system. This class will benefit self-printers, commercial printers, and photographers that trust their work to commercial printing labs. Methods and practices discussed will be relevant to digitally produced inkjet and silver based prints. We will cover some of the basics, including the principles of color management and what it entails. We will quickly progress to discuss color-managed workflows, and you'll learn how to implement a color management system in Adobe Photoshop. We will discuss the benefits of advanced printing solutions, with plenty of time allotted at the end of each section for questions. This class includes a booklet for reference and taking notes. Level Intermediate/Advanced Date: August 21, 2010 10:00 am 2:30 pm Tuition: Members - $55.00 + $10 Book Fee Non-Members - $65.00 + $10.00 Book Fee Materials List Bring a notebook and pen.   Colorado Shakespeare Festival presents The Taming of the Shrew
08/05/2010

by William Shakespeare Directed by Stephanie Shine One of Shakespeares earliest and more popular comedies, The Taming of the Shrew bursts with disguise, deception and devilment. A playfully provocative battle of the sexes pits the shrewish Kate against the fortune-seeking Petruchio. But just who is taming whom? Unlike other romantic comedies, the play does not stop with the wedding. Shakespeare considers the institution of marriage, the rifts between men and women, and the rough journey toward love.
