CSS Based Web Design - Workshop
11/05/2008
Boulder Digital Arts presents
CSS Based Web Design - Workshop
. THIS IS A TWO-EVENING CLASS (1st class 11/3)
. Tired of tables torturing your content? Fed up with editing your entire site to make small design changes? Drowning in 'code soup'? Come to this two-part workshop from Boulder Digital Arts to hear how CSS can separate look from content and make your site code smaller and more nimble.
We'll start with a quick review of the bones of HTML and how to apply meaty styles to them via internal and external stylesheets as well as inline styles. You'll see a layout built from scratch, then rebranded by simply changing the stylesheet. We'll also compare a table-based approach to a CSS-based approach - why each has its place. We'll even show you why tabular data is appropriate in places as well as how to make the table code cleaner and easier to deal with.
We'll cover some of the pros and cons of CSS, go over Javascript tricks to make your page do things you never knew it could, and we'll also touch on making your entire site 'printer friendly' by using a print style sheet. By the end of the second night, you'll be ready to build your first CSS-based site.
Please REGISTER by going to www.boulderdigitalarts.com. Boulder Digital Arts offers affordable training in digital media from professionals working in the field.

Introduction to Playback Theater
11/06/2008
INTRODUCTION TO PLAYBACK IMPROVISATIONAL THEATER: SHORT FORMS
Improvisational acting requires us to be in our bodies, let go of the
critical mind, and say yes to the unknown. It is important training for
all performers, and helpful to anyone opening themselves to the creative
process. In this course, participants use the short forms of Playback's
improvisational theatrical structures to access their performance strengths
and learn to 'play back' on-the-spot stories told by an audience. Playback
is unique in that it draws equally from the performer's ability to
playfully engage their creativity and their empathy to tell a story not
only of humor, but of depth and passion.

Boulder Public Library Film Program
11/07/2008
Nov. 7 - Spotlight on the Boulder International Film Festival. Local Filmmakers Showcase "Iron Ladies of Liberia". Directed by Daniel Junge and Siatta Scott-Johnson (Liberia/U.S.A./Colorado2007). How do you rebuild a country from zero after 14 brutal years of civil war? This film has one good answerlet women lead. With many of the men of the country missing or dead, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was elected pPresident of Liberia by an overwhelming majority of the country's 1.3 million women voters, becoming the first woman ever elected head of state in Africa. But that was just the beginning. This funny, outspoken grandmother of six (with an M.B.A. from Harvard) shook the country to its male-dominated foundations by appointing women to its most powerful positions, all the while facing mortal danger, not the least of which was the constant threat that brutal dictator Charles Taylor might return. This unforgettable film puts us in the room with President Sirleaf as she and her "Iron Ladies" forge a democratic African revolution. Winner of Best Colorado Film at the Boulder International Film Festival in 2008. (77 min.) 7 p.m. in the Canyon Theater at the Main Library.

OPEN CALL Award Design
11/10/2008
OPEN CALL FOR AWARD DESIGN AND CREATION
Deadline for submission: Nov. 15, 2008.
The National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) housed on the University of Colorado Boulder campus is calling for local/Colorado artists to submit design proposals and budgets for the Jeanette Symons Innovator Award (tentative tile). This is the first year NCWIT will be presenting this award to acknowledge and honor the achievements of an outstanding woman in IT. The award will be presented in May 2008. You may hear interviews with many of the nominees on our website ncwit.org (click on: resources-multimedia-entreprenurial heroes-2008)
Please consider the following in your approach to the design:
1. Awardees are women that NCWIT believes should be household names due to their extraordinary contributions to IT (but are not currently).
2. Nominees for the award all possess a “wow” factor variously described as innovative, disruptive, revolutionary, dynamic and/or impactful.
3. We would like to commission the same artist to create this award each year for the foreseeable future. There could be a design concept or continuity that reflects this.
4. The award is named for and honors the spirit of Jeanette Symons an outstanding IT entrepreneur who died in 2008.
5. Please check out our website: www.ncwit.org for an overview of the goals and outreach of NCWIT. You can also listen to an interview with Jeanette Symons on the site.
Please contact: Michele.leonard@colorado.edu for more information.
-------------------------
Background on Jeanette Symons:
http://www.ncwit.org/images/i/259_interview.jpg
Jeanette Symons is the founder, Chief Executive Officer of Industrious Kid, and mother of two. Prior to founding Industrious Kid, Ms. Symons co-founded Zhone Technologies, a telecommunications company that builds 'last mile' access solutions, where she served as the company's Chief Technology Officer and Vice President, Engineering. Prior to Zhone, Ms. Symons was Chief Technical Officer and Executive Vice President of Ascend Communications, Inc, which Ms. Symons co-founded, from January 1989 until June 1999 when the company was purchased by Lucent Technologies. In addition, Ms. Symons was a software engineer at Hayes Microcomputer, a modem manufacturer, where she developed and managed its ISDN program. Ms. Symons holds a B.S. in Systems Engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles. We are deeply saddened by Jeanette's tragic death in a small plane crash on Friday, February 1, 2008. She was a true technology pioneer and we hope her life will continue to inspire others.
This is summarized from an interview with her co-worker--Jeanette was an extremely active woman and an avid outdoorswoman she loved skiing, hiking, running, biking, canoeing, flying, etc. Picking any one activity would be a real challenge as she loved everything! When I asked if there was one thing she thought Jeannette would want to be remembered by, Ann said the thing that changed her life was adopting her two kids
she thought if anything, Jeanette would want to be remembered for her devotion to her kids and perhaps kids in general, as evidenced by her founding Industrious Kid and imbee.com, which they created to have a safe place for kids who use the internet.

BCAA Art on the Walls - Reception for Society for Creative Aging group Exhibit
11/11/2008
Join us for a dessert reception honoring visual artists, & their work, from the Society for Creative Aging.
"Attitudes" is an eclectic collection of creative work, subject matter, and artistic media produced by accomplished artists - age 60 and up - across Boulder County. Diverse in style, tone, texture and treatment of their subject matter, the artists' works reveal the many ways of seeing, thinking, feeling, and referencing our human relationship with life, the natural world, the realms of spirit, and each other.
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of artwork benefits the many artist services of Boulder County Arts Alliance. Exhibit is on display through the month of November.
