Colorado Shakespeare Festival
07/01/2010 - 08/08/2010

Welcome to the Colorado Shakespeare Festival's 53rd summer season! Our 2010 slate once again includes five outstanding plays three by Shakespeare, plus two other classics. The outdoor season in the Mary Rippon Theatre includes what many people consider to be Shakespeares best play King Lear. Playing the title role will be John Hutton, a distinguished actor with many years of experience in some of Americas best theatres, including almost twenty years at the Tony Award-winning Denver Center Theatre Company. This is our sixth production of the play; previous productions were in 1961, 1971, 1979, 1986, and 2001. King Lear is directed by Lynne Collins, whose recent CSF productions of Much Ado About Nothing and Macbeth won multiple area awards. Our Shakespeare comedy will be the ever-popular The Taming of the Shrew, directed by Stephanie Shine, artistic director of the Seattle Shakespeare Company and director of our 2004 production of The Comedy of Errors. Previous CSF productions of Shrew were in 1958 (our first season), 1969, 1981, 1989, 1998, and 2003. We follow up the success of last summer's To Kill a Mockingbird with another great American classic, also on our outdoor stage: Thornton Wilders Our Town. Currently running in New York, Wilder's play is considered one of the best plays ever written by an American playwright. Our Town is directed by Victoria Erville, artistic director of the San Francisco all-female Shakespeare company, Womans Will. On the indoor stage, we present our fourth production of Shakespeares fascinating and very contemporary drama, Measure for Measure, directed by Scott Williams (making his debut with CSF). First produced by us in 1963, it was also seen here in 1983 and 1998. Rounding out the season is another great American classic, The Fantasticks (based on a play by Edmond Rostand, author of Cyrano de Bergerac). Its the worlds longest-running musical, premiering in New York in 1960 and running until 2002; its been produced over 11,000 times in more than 3,000 communities in 67 countries (including Afghanistan and Iran!); were proud to add our production to the list. Directing our production will be Sands Hall, back with us for the first time since appearing as Imogen in our 1975 production of Cymbeline - the production that completed Shakespeares canon for Us. Thats our season (along with this years holiday play, A Christmas Carol), and if youre reading this that means that at least one of these plays has already caught your eye. I hope you enjoy it and I hope youll check out the other plays in this season, if you havent already I think its our best line-up yet! As always, I welcome your feedback write or call, or just drop by our offices, and let us know what you think. Info: see www.coloradoshakes.org
